Description:
Funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, the objective of the McNair Program is to increase the numbers of low income, first-generation, and underrepresented minority undergraduates who pursue PhD degrees and go on to careers in research and teaching at the university level. Students in this program will spend June and July at the University of Rochester conducting research under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Open to students attending institutions with no McNair program. Underrepresented minority students encouraged to apply.

Eligible students are:

Students with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.85 in the major and

Students with exceptional academic progress in the two preceding semesters

Students interested in attending graduate school and pursuing doctoral studies

Full-time sophomores (60 credits minimum), and juniors who can commit to a summer research experience

Students who are traditionally under-represented in graduate school or specific graduate programs;

Students who meet financial and family education requirements;

U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident

Students receive assistance with travel to and from program, a $3,600 stipend, housing, and meal allowance. There are also courses to help students prepare for the graduate admissions process, the general record exam, and conducting various types of research. Additionally, students will receive opportunities to visit graduate schools, present at national McNair research conferences, receive free or reduced fee waivers when applying to graduate schools, and are connected to a larger national McNair community of student scholars.
