Description: Funded by the National Science Foundation, this REU Site program will be a 10-week summer research experience in laboratories at the University of North Dakota (Grand Forks, ND) and Cankdeska Cikana Community College. Each of the participating scientists conducts basic science research involving gene regulation.
Selected participants will work in a laboratory alongside faculty, graduate and undergraduate students. In addition to learning basic lab procedures, participants will receive training in molecular biology, genomics, bioinformatics, and a variety other techniques. REU participants will also read background material for understanding the ongoing experiments, participate in lab meetings, and attend weekly seminars and workshops in which they will learn about science writing, ethical and responsible research conduct, and the graduate school application process. One of the program's goals is to foster a sense of community among student participants and the faculty at UND. Therefore, although each student will be matched with a specific mentor, they will also have the opportunity to work and socialize with the other students and UND faculty. At the end of REU, students will present their findings at a symposium that is open to the public.
Participants will receive a $6,000 salary/stipend, funding for room and board (up to $2,000) and travel to and from UND (up to $750). Additional funding is available for child care and family housing; if needed arrangements can be made with UND child care services. Interested applicants must complete an application, including an autobiographical sketch, and have their college transcript(s) and two letters of recommendation sent to Dr. Van A. Doze.
