Description: The Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Program at Princeton University, in association with NOAA's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL), seeks a postdoctoral or more senior researcher to investigate the factors controlling natural and anthropogenic fire emissions of pollutants to the atmosphere, and their impacts on air quality and climate. The research will apply the GFDL Atmospheric and Earth System Models to focus on: (1) aerosol injection from wildfires, including implementing a model parameterization and evaluation of case studies by comparison with observations, (2) the natural and anthropogenic factors controlling fire emissions, and (3) the impacts of fire emissions on the Earth?s climate system and air quality.
The successful applicant will be based at the GFDL in Princeton, New Jersey, and will work with Drs. Paul Ginoux, Larry Horowitz and Elena Shevliakova. The researcher will be encouraged to collaborate with other scientists at GFDL and Princeton University working on related topics, including land-atmosphere interactions, atmospheric chemistry, and ocean biogeochemistry. The selected candidate will have a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science, or a closely related field, and ideally have one or more of the following attributes: (a) a strong background in climate sciences, atmospheric chemistry, or land phenology, (b) strong computational skills in using observations and comprehensive climate models, and (c) strong diagnostic skills in analyzing large data sets. The initial appointment is for one year with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance and available funding.
