Mike Suarez

Dynamics of Communication in Context
University of Pennsylvania
Philadelphia, PA

Mike Suarez is a second year graduate student in Psychology. I completed a BS in Biology at Beloit College in Beloit, Wisconsin. I currently study western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) in the Central African Republic, at a site established by Diane Doran. My research focuses on the ways in which ecology influences vocal communication and cognition. Lowland gorillas provide an excellent opportunity to investigate this question because they live in an extremely different social and ecological environment than their close cousins, the mountain gorillas. To date very little is known about great ape vocal communication in general and western lowland gorilla vocal communication in particular.
