Lexington, KYI am from Big Stone Gap, a small town in southwest Virginia. I graduated from Powell Valley High School in 1997. In 2001, I graduated summa cum laude from the University of Virginia's College at Wise with B. S. degrees in chemistry and math. At UVA-Wise, I tutored math and organic chemistry, was a lab assistant for general and organic chemistry, and graded papers for the math and chemistry departments. While there, I received the Freshman Chemistry Award, the American Chemical Society Senior Chemistry Award, the Joseph C. Smiddy Science Award, the Theo Gibson Math/Science Scholarship, Intermediate Honors, and was named to Who's Who Among American Colleges and Universities. I was a member of the Darden Society, Omicron Delta Kappa, Sigma Zeta (a math and science honor society), Lavoisier Chemistry Club, the Honor Court, and was a Senior Senator in the Student Government Association. In the fall of 2001, I entered the University of Kentucky seeking a Ph.D. in chemistry. I joined the Bachas group in the spring of 2002 and do research with optodes and ion-selective electrodes.
