University of Mississippi Medical Center Postdoctoral ResearchUniversity of Mississippi
University, MSI am a Jackson and Pearl, MS native and a graduate of Jackson State University with a B.S. in Biology, Pre-Medicine, a M.S. in Microbiology from Auburn University and I received my Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). My dissertation work was under the direction of Dr. Larry McDaniel and I investigated the modulation of the immune response to Streptococcus pneumoniae infections in a systemic mouse model following DNA immunization with pspA, a pneumococcal surface protein. Also, I was a doctoral scholar in the Alliance for Graduate Education in Mississippi (AGEM). After receiving my Ph.D. in May 2007, I accepted a postdoctoral research fellowship in Dr. Mary Marquart’s lab which focuses on S. pneumoniae involvement in ocular infections with the Microbiology Department at UMMC. After the completion of my training, I plan to secure a university faculty position where I plan to teach and mentor undergraduate and graduate students while continuing to perform research. As a scientist, I represent individuals who are not in the forefront but who are performing research that leads to discoveries that are applied by the health care providers. Being an African-American scientist, I have also realized the importance of diversity in the sciences and it is my goal to implement academic programs that allow individual from the under-represented groups to pursue careers in the sciences. In the future, I hope to be in a position where I can create a research environment which gives students the opportunity to experience research first hand.
