Nanoscale Device DevelopmentUniversity of Massachusetts, Amherst
Hello, my name is Bing Mei. I received my Bachelor's degree in 2001 from the University of Pennsylvania with a double major in Physics and Economics. After graduation, I worked as an Applications Engineer for two years in Reologica Instruments Inc., a small rheometer company. As an Application Engineer, I worked closely with clients from a variety of industries, and got a very broad picture of research, development, technology and business. Wanting to become more technically competent, I decided to pursue my PhD degree in Chemical Engineering. I specifically chose Chemical Engineering because of its applied and multidisciplinary nature. Currently starting my 3rd year in the Chemical Engineering Department Doctorate program at the University of Massachusetts, I am working under the tutelage of Professor Maria Santore in the Polymer Science and Engineering Department. My research interest is in the dynamics of macromolecules at solid-liquid interfaces. Understanding the interfacial motions of macromolecules such as polymers and proteins is important fundamentally, but also key in the development of biomedical devices, biosensors, and drug delivery systems. Many applications depend on the mobility of molecules on surfaces such as paints on walls, water on ship hulls, or proteins on implants and biosensors. I am also very interested in the intersection of business and technology and the innovation process. Currently, our IGERT team is trying to develop a biosensor and hopefully be able to commercialize it in the future. Outside of work, I enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, camping, rock climbing, and tennis. I also love to travel. Following my college graduation, I spent 3 months in China, teaching English and traveling. I've also been to Japan, Switzerland, Italy, France, and all over North America.
