Marine Biodiversity: Understanding Threats & Providing Solutions IGERTUniversity of California, San Diego, Scripps Institution of Oceanography
I am a first year Biological Oceanography graduate student at SIO. My motivation to pursue a PhD degree through the CMBC evolved from my curiosity of the marine environment and my interest in the interplay of human activities and the ocean. My Master's research at San Diego State University focused the anatomy and evolution of sound production toothed whales. Understanding the acute sense of sound in these animals tuned me into importance of sound in the ocean, not just to whales but to many other marine organisms and humans. My potential Ph.D. research will explore the use of sound in the ocean by both marine organisms and humans, and aims to address both the biological and social questions surrounding a noisier ocean. After training through the CMBC program, I will be prepared as a scientist to bridge the gap between science and the social and economic issues relevant to maintaining a healthy ocean.
