Marine Biodiversity: Understanding Threats & Providing Solutions IGERT
University of California, San Diego, Scripps Institution of Oceanography

I am a first year Marine Biology graduate student. I have a fervent interest in marine conservation, particularly in marine protected area design and how ecologically destructive land use practices (such as deforestation and agriculture) affect marine coastal ecosystems. This is somewhat of a shift from my previous research as a scientist at NOAA Fisheries, where I studied the population dynamics of dolphin stocks depleted by the purse seine fishery. In the upcoming years, I expect the training I receive in marine and tropical rainforest ecology, resource economics, and environmental policy to enable me to make a positive difference in the way that marine and terrestrial natural resources are managed.
