Stephanie Carmicle
SPIRE Fellow, BiochemistryUniversity of North Carolina, Chapel Hill
I am a native of New Orleans, Louisiana and a proud graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana where I received my B.S. degree in Chemistry. My doctorate was completed in 2003 in the laboratory of Dr. Samuel J. Landry in the Department of Biochemistry at Tulane University. My thesis work investigated the influence of antigen three-dimensional structure on helper T cell epitope immunodominance. After deciding to continue to use my training in Biochemistry to research immunologically relevant problems, I joined the laboratory of Dr. Larry McDaniel at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Work in that lab focused on the interactions between host complement regulatory proteins and surface proteins of Streptococcus pneumoniae. Currently, I am continuing my postdoctoral training in the laboratory of Dr. Ann Erickson in the Department of Biochemistry at UNC-Chapel Hill. I am investigating the posttranslational processing, localization and function of an uncharacterized mammalian protein that is upregulated in antigen presenting cells and neurons. Equipped with both traditional postdoctoral research training and science education training provided by the SPIRE Program; I look forward to helping to develop well-rounded students and encouraging students to seek careers in the biomedical sciences.
